Marching Music Education History And Standardization Of Military Marching Bands

The object of this article is to give you a solid beginning to your drumming education, whether you’re a young person or an adult. It is not meant to be the only source of information for you if you want to become a drummer. A teacher who gives one on one lessons is absolutely essential. You might not need a teacher if you were born exceptionally gifted in drumming and are a complete natural. in that case, I’d love to meet you because you are unbelievably rare. As a matter of fact, I don’t know if I’ve ever met you in my lifetime. Although you might have a large chunk of natural ability, playing in a band with other people can be so entirely different from practicing alone that any advice or guidance from someone with experience is tremendously valuable. However if you do not desire to become a drummer, but want to get some education about drumming and marching, read on as today we will be talking about marching music.

The roots of march music extend into the distant past, with modern march music beginning to take form in the European military bands of the early 1500s. A major step toward modern march music occurred after Polish and Austrian armies drove the Turks out of Vienna in 1683; Turkish instruments (drums, cymbals, horns) quickly became incorporated into European military music. This contributed greatly to the beginning of the modern military band, consisting of brass, wind, and percussion sections.

By the time of the American Revolutionary War (from 1775 to 1783), military bands had become commonplace, and the music had become standardized in three forms: slow and parade march; quick march; and double quick or attack march. By the second half of the 19th century the march caught on with the general public, and it reached its peak of popularity in the mid 1800s to early 1900s. By the early part of the 20th century march music thrived as the preferred music for outdoor entertainment and even dancing, as the march became the standard accompaniment for the Two Step.

During the height of march popularity, its most outstanding composer appeared: John Philip Sousa. His compositions and arrangements still stand as the definitive sound of the march genre. Marches also played a major role in civilian life. At gatherings, processionals and parades, drummers dictated the tempo of a parade formation. This was especially common among the descendants of African slaves and their descendants in Brazil, Cuba and the southern United States, especially in New Orleans. By the early 1920s, marching bands evolved further, into drum and bugle corps (marching ensembles consisting of percussion and brass sections with no woodwinds), which played marches along with other types of music. Today traditional marching bands function as entertainment at sporting events, military events, and as an indispensable element of celebrations such as Mardi Gras and Carnival. In addition, virtually every major university has a marching band. The armed forces also maintain a number of orchestral military bands (that is, Sousa style bands with woodwind sections), which typically appear at 4th of July celebrations.

The popularity of drum and bugle corps has led to the establishment of organizations such as Drum Corps International (DCI), promoting competition and tradition within the style. The most prominent march characteristics are: 1) a solid discernible beat; 2) establishment and development of immediately memorable musical themes; and 3) precise, careful orchestration. Though a marching percussion section typically contains several percussionists, a single individual can reproduce the general sound of march style percussion on a drum set. Having a general knowledge of rudiments (flams, double stroke rolls, etc.) will enable a drummer to execute march drumming fairly easily. Marches are most often performed at a tempo of quarter note equal 120 beats per minute.

In 1994 a study was conducted by psychologist Fran Rauscher and physicist Gordon Shaw at the University of California to test the connection between music and math and science skills. The three test groups were comprised of three year olds. The first group participated in adult-led singing time, the second group, in weekly keyboard lessons, and the third (control group) was not exposed to any type of musical activity. The results were astounding! After eight months, “every child who participated in a music-training program increased his or her spatial intelligence by an average of 46 percent over the control group’s 6 percent increase.” (Baney, Cynthia. Wired for Sound: The Essential Connection Between Music and Development.)
Music education should be an essential part of a child’s growth and development. Numerous studies have repeatedly demonstrated how music education will lead to a higher aptitude in math, science, reading, athletics, creativity and problem solving. But the simple fact is that making music brings children joy, and when you as a parent get involved with your child’s musical pursuits, whether it be through direct interaction in a musical playgroup, or by encouraging your child to learn an instrument, you can share in that joy together.

Steps You Can Take to Get Your Dream Job

Everyone knows that having the best resume is the most important thing an individual needs to have to secure his or her dream job. And to have the best resume, you need to take into account all the necessary things that should be able to support your resume and make it great. And this is not an easy thing to do, either. Arranging a resume is a tricky subject. You need to have everything in balance. Put too many stellar achievements in the resume and you will sound as if you are bragging. Too little of them, however, will make you look like an underachiever. So tweaking your resume should be the first step you need to take prior to anything else. If you can’t do that on your own, though, you can ask for some help from the experts who know what it takes to create a fascinating resume that not only will stun those interviewers but also get that job you so desire. Unfortunately for you, finding the best out there to write you some resume is not something simple as well. There are so many writers in the market that offer different kind of services with their own plus points. This sure will create some confusion for you. Therefore, it is advised that you read resume professional writers reviews that will facilitate and accommodate your needs and requirements.

But there are tips on how to find a job that you may try to apply so that you have broader chance to secure it. First, you should expand your view and put your network into good use. Within that network you have, there must be something that is suitable for you as a jobseeker. But that job might be going to someone else because the people within your network did not think about you when the opportunity first manifested. So you need to make yourself visible and greatly accessible. This also includes contacting your old colleagues, if it’s old college friends, if it’s high school friend, whichever. They should know something and one job opportunity should be there somewhere for you to seize.

Social gathering or meeting is also a good place where you can pool some opportunities. Take notice of anyone important who is coming to the event and work your way to seeing this individual in person in order to see if there’s an opportunity open for you. If you have one, your LinkedIn account could be something powerful that will work on your behalf in getting you something promising. You better maximize its use so you can gain access to the opportunities you didn’t even know exist before. Many big companies out there have websites and on those websites is a special board for any hopeful jobseekers to see if there’s a position they can apply. Make time to check out on that board frequently. Lastly, do not set aside the role headhunters can play in getting you a job opportunity. Hopefully, these tips will get you that dream job.

How To Satisfy 35 Hours Of Project Management Education For The Pmp

Project Managers who aspire to take the PMP exam need to have 35 hours of documented training in the area of project management. However, there is some level of misunderstanding around just how they can achieve this. Many believe they must take specialized and expensive courses, and some are not aware that some of the training and education they already have may qualify. Others think they need to acquire a single 35 hour certificate. Here is a survey of the ways PMP aspirants can satisfy that requirement.

The Requirement
In the Project Management Professional (PMP) Credential Handbook, it states that the candidate must “Document 35 contact hours of project management education.” This requirement applies to all applicants, regardless of degree or project management experience level. So, just what must the candidate do to satisfy those “Contact Hours of Project Management Education”, where at least 35 contact hours of specific instruction addressed learning objectives in project
management?

Documenting Project Management Training and Education
The first step is to document all education hours regardless of when they were accrued. PM education hours for these purposes do not expire and do not need to be within any recent time frame. However, before submitting the application, the course work must already be completed. PMP Prep coursework does qualify, as it is project management oriented, but it would need to occur before the candidate actually submits the application. Note that “one contact hour is equivalent to one actual hour (60 minutes) of training or instruction received”, as per the PMI.

After documenting all hours, PMP candidates need “classify” content of the courses according to the PMBOK knowledge areas, including project quality, project scope, project schedule, project budget, project communications, project risk, project procurement, and project integration management. If all hours add up to 35 or more, the candidate has already satisfied the requirements. In many cases, the candidate will have either no hours or less than 35 hours of PM training, and they will need to fill that gap with additional project management training.

What Qualifies?
These educational requirements can be met by demonstrating the successful completion of courses, workshops, and training sessions offered by one or more of the following types of education providers:

A. PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s) – Pre-approved courses offered by PMI R.E.P.s. These can be classroom instruction, live instructor-lead training online, or pure online packaged courses that are available 24×7.

B. PMI Component organizations – PMI chapters, specific interest groups, colleges, or the PMI.

C. Employer/company-sponsored programs – as long as content can be logically mapped to the knowledge areas.

D. Training companies or consultants – as long as content can be logically mapped to the knowledge areas.

E. Distance-learning companies, including an end-of-course assessment – can include live instructor-lead training online, or pure online packaged courses that are available 24×7, as long as content can be logically mapped to the knowledge areas.

F. University/college academic and continuing education programs, as long as content can be logically mapped to the knowledge areas.

Note that one hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour. Non-classroom instruction, such as online training, also must comply with the rule that one hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour. Project Management podcasts can also satisfy all or a portion of the requirement. The important thing is to be able to provide complete and authoritative documentation of the training and education, such as certificates, tests, syllabus, course descriptions, and transcript to properly support your claim.

Here are some scenarios of what should qualify:

1. Completion of a 15 week university or college course on project management that met for three hours per week would qualify for 45 contact hours.

2. Completion of a university or college course that was approximately 50% on the subject of project management that met for two hours per week for 15 weeks would qualify for 50% x 30 contact hours, or 15 contact hours. The additional 20 contact hours could be earned with an 8 hour REP classroom training, and 12 hours of REP 24×7 online training.

3. Completion of a single REP classroom or online, 24×7 set of courses that add up to 35 hours or more.

4. Completion of some combination non-REP classroom project management training, live instructor-lead online project management training, online 24×7 project management training courses, or project management podcasts, as long as they are clearly documentable.

What does not satisfy the PMP Educational Requirements?
The following do not satisfy the education requirements:

1. PMI chapter meetings, unless spent conducting a learning activity

2. Self-study (e.g., reading books)

3. Degree program, such as MBA, in its entirety, but many of the classes within the program will apply and must be documented individually

Conclusion
There are many ways to satisfy the PMI requirement of 35 hours of project management training. Any training must be in the areas of project quality, project scope, project schedule, project budget, project communications, project risk, project procurement, and project integration management. The PMI rule is that one hour of training equals one of these contact hours. Applicants must be able to clearly document the training with proper proof. The final authority is the PMI, and the authoritative document is the Project Management Professional (PMP) Credential Handbook, which can be found at http://www.pmi.org/PDF/pdc_pmphandbook.pdf. Applicants should contact the PMI directly with any questions or concerns.

Benefits Of Educational Software

Learning things in a traditional way could be a boring task for many students. The conventional way is to go to the school, learn new things from your teacher, bring homework, and go back to school again after. It’s a continuous 5-day or 6-day cycle for some. In this age of computers, the discovery of educational software broke the chain of this very long conventional learning cycle. Educational software made learning fun, interesting, and easy. And these aren’t for kids only.

Here are some advantages:

– Economical. What’s a $100 worth of software compared to a $1000 worth of school education. Not for anything, this studying method is really economical. Imagine, you will not be spending for transportation, food, and tuition fees anymore.
– You can control your time. You are the driver of your curriculum. You can control when you want to finish. You can delay or advance depending on your level of comprehension to a particular software.
– You can choose your lessons. If you want to focus on a particular lesson at a time, you can. It’s up to you how many lessons our courses you want to take at a time.
– Learn at the comforts of your home. Just like other plug and play gadgets, this software only requires a computer. If you have a laptop, you can spend your learning time in any part of the house.
– Online learning scheme. Tired of reading 100 page books? Educational software is the key. For the visual people who loves colors, shapes, and the likes, this will excite your sight. You don’t need to go through the sometimes boring pages of the book. All you have to do is click and click and click.
– Self help. This software empowers the user. Though sometimes a tutor is still needed to guide you in the initial stage (especially if the software is complicated), you can play with the software and it will allow you to have limitless trials. You can go back to a lesson over and over again until you’ve mastered it.
– Fun. Learning can be a fun activity. For kids, this educational software can be also an avenue of play. Maker of this software considered the fun part of learning. They know that more kids will be attracted to learn by inserting games.
– Interactive. There are software that will help you to interact with other online students. You don’t need to go to a school and see your classmates. With an attached computer camera, you can easily mingle with your online classmates.
– You can share. Once you’re done with a lesson, you can easily share the software. It’s as easy as lending a book. But now, it’s the whole course that you are sharing.

Education must not be ignored. Whether you’re in a classroom or inside the comforts of your home, finishing your education is as important as fueling your engine. The good thing is, we are now free to choose how. With the birth of this software, we can assure ourselves that we will not end up on the losing end.

Is It Too Late to Switch to a STEM Field of Work?

After years in an unrelated field – or even after a few months – it’s not unheard of to wish you’d have had the foresight to get a degree in a STEM-related field of work. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics jobs offer challenging but rewarding work that some people simply have the knack for. With the right training, you, too, could go far in the field. With drive and commitment, it’s never too late to switch to a STEM job.

Browse a list of available STEM online graduate and undergraduate degree programs to find out more about what earning your license and/or degree would entail. Many of these courses are flexible and allow you to complete work at your convenience, so you can continue working while you earn your degree. You can take as many or as few courses per semester as you can reasonably handle, ensuring you’ll get your STEM qualifications at the pace that makes the most sense for you. There will always be a high demand for STEM job applicants, so you needn’t take an accelerated course unless that’s what you want to do.

Get Applicable Training

You don’t need to be a young adult to work in STEM; you just need the right training. Your licensure and/or degree is one essential step to becoming a qualified candidate for a STEM job. If possible, get hands-on experience as well. Your degree program may help you find an internship or apprenticeship as necessary, or you can search for the work yourself in lieu of or in addition to your current job.

Parlay Your Experience

Even if you’ve never worked in STEM before, you can parlay whatever you’ve done into something STEM employers find attractive. For example, perhaps you took on a leadership role or you were part of a team that designed and implemented a marketing campaign. Creativity, leadership, and drive are all valued qualities in a STEM candidate.

With an online graduate school program, you don’t even have to commit to quitting your current job yet as you get a feel for the courses and the type of work a career in STEM would entail. There are jobs in the industry you might not have even considered and an online program will help you figure out which type of job would best suit your needs. If looking for well-paying work with great benefits and job stability, it’s never too late to go back to school to earn a degree in a STEM field.
